Frequently Asked Questions about The Book Buyback Program
How is price determined?
The pricing formula is simple. If a book is being used on campus in the upcoming term, you will receive 50% of the current new book price. If there is a demand for the book outside of Laurier, you will receive between 10% and 30%, depending on market value. Other factors that influence a book buyback is how old they are and what the market demand is for them. Keep in mind that books not needed for a current term at Laurier may be bought back in the future.
When is the best time to sell back my books? The Book Buyback program runs during the first week of classes and during the exam period for Fall and Winter terms. The highest volume of titles are purchased for the Fall term, but there is still a great opportunity to sell back books in the other terms.
What can I do if I find that the price offered is too low?
If the price offered is not enough, you can sell your book privately to other students on campus. Keep in mind that books not needed for a current term at Laurier may be bought back in the future. The Laurier Bookstore also offers an Online Used Book Exchange where students can buy and sell used books. For more information, click on http://icbb.sellmytextbooks.org/members/120/.
Does the previous edition of my text have resale value?
Usually older edition of books do not have any resale value. The buyback system ensures that only the correct and most current edition is purchased.
How firm is the price? The demand for the book is finite and is maintained in real time. The demand decreases as more books are bought back at the end of each term.
Do you buy study guides?
Most study guides are bought back, as long as they are in resalable condition.
Can I sell a book I originally purchased used?
Yes, as long as the book is in resalable condition. We reserve the right to not purchase damaged books or books that are unlikely to be repurchased by other students.
There are several factors affecting the value of a used textbook: the condition of the book; whether the instructor is reusing the text in the next term; whether the publisher is issuing a new edition of the text; nationwide demand for the text; projected needs for the text have been fulfilled.
*Please note that Book Buyback is held in the Concourse at the beginning and end of each term. Please see "News & Events" for dates and times.
